Many Database Administrators are asked to supply Oracle-related standards for their companies. Most experienced DBAs who do this work end up with very similar standards - there is not an infinite number of ways to logically deal with Oracle, which means that DBAs are forever reinventing the wheel !

This is why we are suggesting in this section a number of standards which can be used at least as a template to define your own company standards. Do not take them as being the definitive gospel and feel free to adapt - around a similar theme, there may be a huge number of variations. In terms of standards, what matters is consistency, which helps a newcomer to quickly grasp how everything is organized.

You may well define as a standard that: in queries, keywords are in lowercase and table and column names in uppercase, or the reverse. One standard is just as good as the other. What would be wrong would be to mix the two.
Similarly, we have attempted to define here a number of rules and recommendations. Some of them may conflict with existing rules in your company, whether written or otherwise.

The #1 rule for any standards should be :
Try as much as possible to be consistent with what is already in place if it's not unreasonable.

The #2 rule probably is :
Do not make a 'standards' document too thick, nobody will read it!

We hope that you will find these documents helpful. If you have other sets of standards you wish to put in the public domain to help fellow DBAs, we shall be delighted to publish any interesting document you may send us.
